Shake, Rattle and Roll

We've been experiencing a series of small earthquakes here in Southern California. It's interesting talking to my friends about it. Absolutely no one is concerned. Why should we be? Seismic activity is a way of life around here.

The latest little rolling jolt reminded me of the time I was in East Africa conducting research for my novel, Green City In the Sun.  My husband and I were in the bar at the New Stanly Hotel (where one can still see Earnest Hemmingway's handprints in the cement) and I asked our guide, Alan, if Kenya ever had earthquakes.

He said, "We had one once.  I was with a group of tourists at the Nairobi Hilton and it was evening when the tremor struck.  Shook the hotel so badly that people ran screaming from the hotel and out into the street.  It's interesting," he added with a smile.  "You could tell which ones were the Californians because they were still holding their drinks!"
