The Ten Second Pep Talk
As someone once said of aspiring writers: “Everyone wants to be Jackie Collins on the Letterman show. No one wants to be Jackie Collins at eight o’clock in the morning facing the blank page.”
It’s true. While one of the fun parts of being a published author is being recognized for one’s achievement, the flip side is getting the writing done. And that’s where the hard part comes in. Although I have published twenty-three novels, I still have, like everyone else on our beautiful green planet, my good days and my bad days. The good days are, of course, those in which the words flow like hot chocolate and I can do no wrong. The bad days are were I stare at my blank computer screen and want to put my foot through it.
Over the years, I have sought sources that would give me encouragement, lift me up, motivate me. Not long, boring sermons, mind you, but an instant pick-me-up. The ten-second pep talk. Bumper sticker wisdom. As a result, I have a nice little collection of words of encouragement from a variety of sources, and every now and then I turn to my treasure trove for the occasional needed boost. Permit me to share a few gems. Print them on Post-Its and stick them to your keyboard. Stick them to your forehead. Think about them. Let them be your mantra. And then get back to that blank screen.
Remember:
“Every knock is a boost.”
“Fake it till you make it.”
“Act like you expect to get to the end zone.”
“Life begins each morning. Every sunrise is the open door to a new world, new vistas, new goals and new tryings. Don’t waste it!”
“Find fresh lessons in the familiar.”
“Today is the first day of the rest of your novel.”
“One page at a time.”
“If you can talk, you can write.”
“Write a page today; what’s the worst that could happen?”
And finally, my personal favorite: “One more paragraph and you can go have lunch.”
Good luck!
