Christmas In July

by Barbara Wood last modified Jul 10, 2017 06:08

I first became aware of this idea when I was idly channel surfing many years ago and I landed on one of those home shopping programs. It was July and the caption on the screen was "Christmas in July" and the host was selling Christmas ornaments. I thought it odd and then I quickly assumed that some people really want to get a jump start on the holidays and, "Wow, aren't they organized!" Years later while researching some obscure little tid bit for one of my books, I came across a 1940's movie, "Christmas in July". A comedy about a man who thinks he's won an enormous amount of money in a contest and decides to buy presents for everyone he knows. In the Southern hemisphere winter hits in July and in some countries they celebrate a Midwinter Christmas in July in order to have that wintry feel. After all, songs like "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or "Frosty the Snowman" must be strange to hear or sing during the Summer.

I'm thinking about this because it's extremely hot in my neck of the woods at the moment and I am looking forward to the Fall which then makes me think about Halloween, Thanksgiving and ultimately Christmas. And while Christmas in Southern California can be sunny and 75 degrees, that's a whole 30 degrees cooler than current temperatures, which by definition makes that qualify for Winter around here!
